RATINGS

99James Suckling

Pears, peaches and hints of honeysuckle. So perfumed with rocky undertones and notes of bananas and flint. Full-bodied with a freshness and depth that is impressive and extremely long and persistent. Flint and lime at the end. Salty and intense.

96Decanter Magazine (points)

...aromas show ample minerality, flinty grilled lime and white flowers...palate is a marriage of honeyed apricot richness with great notes of briny seafoam, crushed slate and hints of bright lemon zest and white pepper...

94The Wine Advocate

...open on the nose with arresting scents of peach, honey, elderflower and lemongrass...medium-bodied palate is satiny and expansive, its generous flavors enlivened by vibrant acidity, and it has a long, layered finish.

92Jeb Dunnuck

...approachable on opening with, aromas of fresh pineapple, ripe peach, orange blossom, wet stone, and honeycomb. This carries with ease to the supple palate...full-bodied, with a delicate, soft, stony texture and a clean, tapered finish...very appealing...

91Vinous / IWC

...soft, open-knit... Apricot, tangerine peel and light tropical notes open nicely, framed by a discreet touch of oak that wraps it all together.

PRODUCER

Raen

Raen is a new boutique producer with a distinguished pedigree. It was founded in 2013 by brothers Carlo and Dante Mondavi, grandsons of Robert Mondavi – the man generally thought of as the father of modern, high-quality California winemaking. Their father is Tim Mondavi, who for much of his life ran the winemaking side of the Mondavi empire. Dante and Carlo followed the family winemaking tradition by studying winemaking in Europe and California before coming back to work at family enterprises, including Opus One and Continuum. At Raen they are focused on producing Pinot Noir from the western hills of the Sonoma Coast.

REGION

United States, California, Sonoma, Sonoma Coast

Sonoma Coast AVA runs from San Pablo Bay in the south to Mendocino County in the north. It includes 7,000 vineyard acres and earned AVA status in 1987. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean means it gets double the rainfall of nearby inland appellations and the ocean gives the appellation a relatively cool climate. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir can thrive in these conditions, and there are numerous producers making critically acclaimed Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

TYPE

White Wine, Chardonnay

This white variety originated in Burgundy, but is now grown around the world. Its flexibility to thrive in many regions translates to wide flavor profile in the market. Chardonnay is commonly used in making Champagne and sparkling wines.
