RATINGS

96The Wine Advocate

...enticingly savory earthy/meaty/gamey notions over a somewhat broody core of black fruits, tar, tree bark and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, tightly wound and muscular in the mouth, it has a gregarious fragrant earth character supported by firm, grainy tannins and a racy line, finishing long and minerally.

96James Suckling

...big and flavorful red with blackberries and blueberries. Hints of cedar and sandalwood, too. Full-bodied, layered and enticing.

96+ Jeb Dunnuck

...blockbuster beauty that does everything right...backward, concentrated notes of blackcurrants, blueberries, toasty oak, graphite and tobacco leaf. Deep, opulent and full-bodied, it’s perfectly balanced on the palate, has good acidity, building tannin and a great finish.

95Wine Enthusiast

Smooth and grippy...beautiful undercurrent of balanced bright acidity, which lifts the richness of the fruit to new levels. Blueberry, black cherry and graphite combine with ease around powerful dusty tannin and toasted oak.

92Vinous / IWC

Super-ripe black cherry, plum, chocolate, lavender, spice and sweet French oak are all pushed forward...

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Oakville AVA is one of the two or three most prestigious appellations in the United States. Located in the heart of Napa Valley, its 5,000 vineyard acres produce some of the world’s most acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon, including such California “cult” Cabs as Screaming Eagle and Harlan Estate. Before those boutique producers rose to fame in the 1990s, Oakville was already renowned as home to Robert Mondavi, Opus One and Groth Vineyards, among others. Along with the famous wineries, there are premier vineyards in this AVA, including Martha’s Vineyard and To Kalon Vineyard. To Kalon was first planted in 1868 by H.W. Crabb, one of California’s first viticultural researchers, and he named the vineyard after the ancient Greek phrase for “most beautiful.” Though many grapes can be successfully grown in Oakville, Cabernet Sauvignon is king. Merlot and Chardonnay are also frequently planted. Oakville Cabs are prized for their richness, complexity and weight. Oakville was designated as an AVA in 1993.

TYPE

Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the most widely grown grape varieties, it can be found in nearly every wine growing region. A cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a hardy vine that produces a full-bodied wine with high tannins and great aging potential.

RATINGS

95James Suckling

This is big and chewy with lots of blackberry and hazelnut character. A full and flavorful red with structure and intensity...

95Wine Enthusiast

...bright, integrated, tamed in tannin and juicy. Gorgeous inviting aromatics make an immediate statement, opening the door for a stage of animated blueberry, blackberry and cassis. The texture is complex but supple and smooth.

94Jeb Dunnuck

...perfumed, complex beauty that’s already impossible to resist. Offering a touch of red fruit in its spice, dried flowers, cassis, and black raspberry bouquet, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a light, graceful texture, no hard edges, and a ripe, seamless profile...

93The Wine Advocate

...pure crushed black currants and black plums notes over hints of fallen leaves, fertile loam, aniseed, chargrill and olives. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers satisfying richness and depth with soft, fine-grained tannins and seamless acid, finishing long on a savory note.

92Wine Spectator

...lots of elasticity to the flavor and texture, mixing dark berry fruit with fresh earth, gravel and cedary oak notes, ending long and firm...

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Oak Knoll

Oak Knoll AVA is one of Napa Valley’s newest appellations, having received that status in 2004. Located on the southern end of Napa Valley, the appellation is close to San Pablo Bay and therefore relatively cool. Of the 8,300 acres within the appellation, 4,150 are vineyards. The principal grapes grown are Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Riesling. Locals like to call Oak Knoll “the sweet spot” thanks to its location between the San Pablo Bay and its maritime climate and the much hotter climate of Napa Valley’s floor.
