2016 Alpha Omega Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon

RATINGS

99Jeb Dunnuck

Loaded with notions of crème de cassis, incense, flowery spice, and earth, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a seamless, weightless texture, building yet sweet tannins, and a great, great finish.

98James Suckling

...very powerful...with blackberries and blueberries and hints of tile and crushed stones.

97The Wine Advocate

...hits the ground running with gregarious black plum preserves, crème de cassis, tilled soil, Indian spices and potpourri notes with touches of tilled soil and tree bark. Full-bodied, rich and laden with decadent black fruit preserves flavors, it is textured with gorgeous, plush tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing long and spicy.

95Vinous / IWC

Black cherry, chocolate, new leather, licorice and new French oak all fill out...beautifully delineated. Time in the glass brings out an attractive floral quality and slightly redder tonalities in the fruit.

95Wine Enthusiast

Deep red fruit evokes currant and cassis—rich, concentrated flavors that complement notions of iron, graphite and dusty rock. Supple and full of length and breadth...long-lasting seasonings of oak and cocoa powder.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Oakville, To Kalon Vineyard

To- Kalon is one of the most famous vineyards in Napa Valley, often called the first “grand cru” California vineyard. It has always inspired those who live near it. Native Americans called the area around it tu-la-halusi – meaning “beautiful land.” And later residents called it To-Kalon, Greek for “the most beautiful.” Originally planted by Hamilton Crabb in 1968, it today is owned by Andy Beckstoffer, the Robert Mondavi Winery and Opus One. Beckstoffer owns the lion’s share, with an 89-acre vineyard planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Beckstoffer sell To-Kalon grapes to such acclaimed producers as Schrader, Paul Hobbs, Tor Kenward, Realm, Alpha Omega and the Morlet Family. Beckstoffer Vineyards, a vineyard management business, owns and farms more than 3,600 acres of highly prestigious grape growing acreage in Napa Valley, Mendocino County and the Red Hills of Lake County. A senior executive with Heublein in the 1960s, Andy Beckstoffer is credited with steering Napa Valley vintners towards improving farming and the quality of the grapes used for wine.

TYPE

Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the most widely grown grape varieties, it can be found in nearly every wine growing region. A cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a hardy vine that produces a full-bodied wine with high tannins and great aging potential.

RATINGS

97The Wine Advocate

...bold notions of Chinese five spice, smoked meats and truffles with a core of blackcurrant cordial, blueberry pie and chocolate box plus a waft of eucalyptus. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated with ripe, firm, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, it finishes very long and beautifully layered.

97James Suckling

...focused and bright red with blackberries and lots of muscular tannins that are toned and polished. Full body, juicy fruit and a savory finish. Very long and energetic.

95Jeb Dunnuck

...silky, seamless, yet full-bodied style that exudes class. Offering up mountain fruit-like notes of cassis, leafy green herbs, graphite, and mountain scrub brush...high-quality tannins, notable complexity, and a polished, balanced profile...

91Vinous / IWC

...powerful, inky wine. The black cherry, tobacco, chocolate, torrefaction, smoke, leather and licorice flavors are rich and super concentrated...long on depth and intensity...plenty of immediacy and pleasure to be found.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

Rutherford AVA is just north of the Oakville AVA in the heart of Napa Valley, and it is equally distinguished. It is home to Beaulieu Vineyard and inglenook, arguably Napa Valley’s most historically influential wineries. Inglenook started making in wine in the late 19th century, and Beaulieu Vineyards was producing by the first years of the 20th century. BV founder Georges de Latour is particularly esteemed for having recruited Andre Tchelistcheff, a renowned research oenologist, to move from France to Napa Valley in 1938 and run BV’s winemaking. The legendary Tchelistcheff brought European winemaking techniques to Napa Valley and vastly improved wine quality. Other Rutherford winemakers followed his lead. Today there are 5,000 vineyard acres in Rutherford and many acclaimed producers. The famous Silverado Trail with its exclusive, limited production wineries, runs partly through Rutherford AVA. Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignons are characterized by supple tannins, richness, notes of cherry and plum, depth and the ability to age for several decades. Besides Cabernet Sauvignon the AVA also grows Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel. It received its AVA designation in 1994.
