RATINGS

98The Wine Advocate

...aromas of vanilla, tobacco and cassis...full-bodied and rich, with a velvety mouthfeel, great intensity and super length.

98Jeb Dunnuck

...massive notes of crème de cassis, lead pencil, vanilla bean, white chocolate, and hints of mint all soaring from the glass...full-bodied...with a flamboyant, opulent mouthfeel, it opens up beautifully with time in the glass...

96Vinous / IWC

Expansive, smoke-tinged aromas of ripe red and blue fruit liqueur, candied flowers, sandalwood, coconut and pipe tobacco show superb definition and spicy lift. Stains the palate with alluringly sweet cherry-cola, blackcurrant jam, mocha, vanilla and fruitcake flavors that show noteworthy depth as well as energy...extremely long, gently tannic finish that echoes the cherry and floral notes.

96James Suckling

...scents of Indian ink and vivid, new American oak take center stage, followed by redcurrant, blackcurrant and meaty aromas, as well as a sanguine, iodine edge... Deep and dense, the attractively chewy tannins are draped in rich, ripe blackberry and blackcurrant flavors.

95Wine Spectator

Distinctive and rich...shows off flashy vanilla, milk chocolate and cream soda notes up front...then sinks into a groove of plump blackberry and black cherry flavors, revealing dashes of black pepper and cigar box...tannins are dense yet polished. Presents plenty of harmony on the finish, with a vanilla bean hint weaving in and out.

93Wine Enthusiast

...nose is a heady combo of lifted red currant, red licorice, flowers, mocha and mint...palate is big but poised and lifted by tangy, curranty fruit and a velvety, almost creamy texture...fine-grained, herb-tinged tannins...

17.5Jancis Robinson

Dark chocolate, black cherry, very strident tannins that have super-fine texture... Very dark, very savoury, very serious and very impressive.

PRODUCER

Penfolds

Penfolds makes Australia’s most renowned wine – Penfolds Grange, a Shiraz-based wine that was inspired by Rhone Valley’s Syrah blends. Grange was introduced in 1951 by Max Schubert, the legendary Penfolds winemaker in the middle and later years of the 20th century. As a wine producer, Penfolds’ history dates to the mid-19th century, when a young English physician named Dr. Penfold migrated to Australia and started producing wine as boon to the health of his patients. Until World War II the winery specialized in fortified wines and brandy, but Schubert helped turn Penfolds into a successful producer of table wines, including Grange and Bin 707, a Cabernet Sauvignon. Today the company is owned by Southcorp Wines and produces many grape varieties, including Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Chardonnay along with Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Annual production of Grange is 8,000-10,000 cases. Annual production of Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon is 10,000-14,000 cases.

REGION

Australia, South Australia

South Australia is the nation’s most important wine region. South Australia is to Australia what California is to the U.S. About half of Australia’s wine comes from South Australia and many of the country’s most acclaimed producers are there. Wineries based in South Australia include Penfolds Grange, Torbreck, Amon Ra, Henschke and Jacob’s Creek. The prestigious Barossa Valley is located in South Australia, and is often compared to Napa Valley because it is gorgeous topography covered in grape vines. First farmed by 19th century German-speakers who immigrated from what is now Poland, the Barossa Valley is the crown jewel of the region. South Australia has widely varying climates, from very hot, dry areas to cooler, high altitude areas. There are more than 150,000 acres of vineyards in South Australia, with more being planted each month. Shiraz is king, though the region also produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Mourvedre, Chardonnay and Semillon.

TYPE

Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the most widely grown grape varieties, it can be found in nearly every wine growing region. A cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a hardy vine that produces a full-bodied wine with high tannins and great aging potential.
