RATINGS

95Jeb Dunnuck

...complex notes of forest floor, scorched earth, cedar, and spice that develop with time in the glass. I love its texture, it has fine, fine tannin, no hard edges, and a great finish. Destemmed and brought up in one-third new French oak, it’s another rocking effort from Courtney that will keep for a decade or more. (June 2018)

94The Wine Advocate

Medium to deep ruby-purple in color, the 2015 Pinot Noir Ferrington Vineyard has a drop-dead gorgeous perfume of violets, rose hip tea, warm raspberries and kirsch with suggestions of garrigue, dried lavender, Provence herbs and tilled soil plus a hint of underbrush. Medium to full-bodied, the palate gives a taut frame of grainy tannins and seamless freshness, supporting the muscular yet wonderfully perfumed fruit, finishing long and earthy. 213 cases were made.

94Vinous / IWC

...wonderfully lush, aromatic and expressive. All of the natural richness of the vintage comes through in this ample, voluptuous wine. A rush of succulent red cherry, blood orange, spice, star anise and rose petal builds into the powerful, flamboyant finish. What a gorgeous wine this is.

90Wine Spectator

Well-structured, offering a firm mix of raspberry, licorice, dusty herb and cedar flavors, with the structure and density making this a candidate for short-term cellaring.

REGION

United States, California, North Coast, Mendocino County, Anderson Valley

Mendocino AVA was established in 1984 and amended in 1989. It includes numerous sub-appellations. Mendocino AVA is entirely within Mendocino County, and the AVA is known for its Mediterranean climate. Vintners successfully grow Carignan, Charbono, Grenache, Zinfandel, Petit Sirah and Syrah. In cooler parts of the region Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are also grown. Mendocino County is home to nearly 600 vineyards, and many have been certified organic for decades, thanks to the region’s famous “green and sustainable” approach to agriculture and nearly everything else. Mendocino was named for 16th century explorers, a pair of brothers whose last name was Mendoza. Winemaking, however, didn’t start until the 19th century when some would-be gold miners decided it was more profitable to make wine than to pan for gold. Italian immigrants in the late 19th century continued to establish winemaking ventures.

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
