2015 Dana Estates Helms Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

RATINGS

99Jeb Dunnuck

Just about pure perfection....Sensational notes of crème de cassis, burning embers, bay leaf, and graphite all flow to a full-bodied 2015 that has a deep, layered, multi-dimensional texture that’s hard to describe. ….Bravo!

98+ The Wine Advocate

Gregarious nose of freshly crushed black currants, black berries and mulberries with touches of red roses, Indian spices...Medium-bodied, fine, fresh and elegantly styled, it delivers tons of black berry and spicy layers

97Vinous / IWC

Tremendous fruit purity and striking presence. Raspberry jam, spice and floral notes are front and center in this plush, beautifully resonant Cabernet Sauvignon from Dana's home vineyard site. Cedar, sweet tobacco and earthy overtones

PRODUCER

Dana Estates

Dana Estates was started in 2005 when Hi Sang Lee, a South Korean businessman and wine importer, bought a winery and vineyard in Rutherford, Napa Valley, and started his own label. Lee built an impressive new winery and named his enterprise Dana, which is Sanskrit for “spirit of generosity.” Lee hired Philippe Melka as his winemaker and the label’s first release was the 2005 vintage. The aim is to make world class Cabernet Sauvignon in very limited quantities of 300 to 400 cases annually, though Lee has said he eventually expects to produce up to 2,000 cases a year. Dana makes three single vineyard Cabs from the Helms, Hershey and Lotus Vineyards. It also makes Onda, a mostly Cabernet Sauvignon blend of grapes from the various vineyards.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

Rutherford AVA is just north of the Oakville AVA in the heart of Napa Valley, and it is equally distinguished. It is home to Beaulieu Vineyard and inglenook, arguably Napa Valley’s most historically influential wineries. Inglenook started making in wine in the late 19th century, and Beaulieu Vineyards was producing by the first years of the 20th century. BV founder Georges de Latour is particularly esteemed for having recruited Andre Tchelistcheff, a renowned research oenologist, to move from France to Napa Valley in 1938 and run BV’s winemaking. The legendary Tchelistcheff brought European winemaking techniques to Napa Valley and vastly improved wine quality. Other Rutherford winemakers followed his lead. Today there are 5,000 vineyard acres in Rutherford and many acclaimed producers. The famous Silverado Trail with its exclusive, limited production wineries, runs partly through Rutherford AVA. Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignons are characterized by supple tannins, richness, notes of cherry and plum, depth and the ability to age for several decades. Besides Cabernet Sauvignon the AVA also grows Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel. It received its AVA designation in 1994.

TYPE

Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon

2015 Dana Estates Hershey Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

RATINGS

98Jeb Dunnuck

...black fruit-driven style in its espresso, crushed rocks, scorched earth, and chocolate-tinged aromas and flavors. On the palate, it’s beautifully full-bodied and rich, with a seamless texture, perfectly integrated acidity and tannins, and a great finish.

96The Wine Advocate

...blueberry preserves, menthol and espresso notes giving way to notions of baking spices, black pepper and cedar chest. Medium to full-bodied, vibrant and expressive, if has a firm frame of velvety, approachable tannins and wonderful vivacity, finishing long and fruity.

96Vinous / IWC

Inky, deep and beautifully layered in the glass...super expressive today. Graphite, menthol, plum, lavender and pencil shavings add shades of nuance, and yet the intensity of the fruit dominates.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

Howell Mountain AVA in Northeastern Napa Valley was the first of Napa Valley’s sub-appellations, earning its own designation in 1984, just a year after Napa Valley became an appellation. As the name suggests, the AVA is in one of the highest elevations in the area. Every vineyard in the appellation is at least 1,400 feet above sea level. Some vineyards are as high as 2,200 feet and because of their altitude most of the AVA’s vineyards receive more sun than vineyards at lower elevations, which are affected by fog from the Pacific Ocean and the San Pablo Bay. Howell Mountain was home to vineyards in the late 19th century, but winemaker Randy Dunn is considered the area’s most influential modern pioneer. Dunn moved to Howell Mountain in 1979, acquired property and began making exceptionally rich Cabernet Sauvignon. The AVA also grows Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. There are 600 vineyard acres within Howell Mountain AVA.

2015 Dana Estates Lotus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

RATINGS

99James Suckling

Extremely complex aromas of iodine, dark fruit, oyster shell, forest floor and blackberries follow through to a full body. Great intensity and integrity.

99Jeb Dunnuck

... ripe, sexy wine that has a huge nose of crème de cassis, blueberry liqueur, crushed rocks, and liquid violet characteristics as well as obvious minerality and earth. Deep, full-bodied, and incredibly powerful on the palate...

98Vinous / IWC

Aromatically broad and expansive, with tremendous depth, the Lotus is simply magnificent...Sweet tobacco, spice, cedar, sweet red cherry and mint..., I am blown away by the wine's textural resonance, volume and extraordinary balance.

97-100The Wine Advocate

Primary black and blue fruit nose of warm plums, blueberries and black cherries plus hints of spice box and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, rich, concentrated and firmly structured with ripe, grainy tannins, it has bags of depth

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

St. Helena AVA is at the northern end of Napa Valley just north of Rutherford and south of Calistoga. It is a relatively warm climate thanks to the Mayacamas Mountains on its western edge, which protect it from Pacific Ocean fog. Out of the 9,000 acres in the appellation, some 1,500 are under vine. The principal grapes grown in St. Helena are the Bordeaux grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. St. Helena is considered prime wine producing territory, and it was one of the first important wine producing regions in northern California. The legendary Charles Krug founded his winery just north of the town of St. Helena in 1873, and today the appellation is home to many prestigious producers, including Abreu, Grace Family and Spottswoode.
