RATINGS

96-98The Wine Advocate

...gorgeous, engaging bouquet with a conspicuous oyster shell/marine influence running through the crystalline red berry fruit. There is outstanding aromatics, tension and energy here. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, harmonious and candied with finer tannin than the Mazoyères-Chambertin that one used to find with Bertrand Maume's wines, blessed with superb salinity and precision on the finish.

96Vinous / IWC

Perfumed and floral on the nose, this is pure and utterly seductive...palate is medium-bodied with vivacious red berry fruit, real depth and dimension... Tender finish; this is going to be a beauty.

95Wine Spectator

This red features a chunky profile, packed with black cherry, black currant, graphite and tar flavors. The smoky, toasty, vanilla-accented oak frame adds both sweetness and tannins.

92-95Stephen Tanzer

Liqueur-like dark fruits and black olive on the nose. Very rich, pliant and concentrated in a rather wild, soil-driven way. Combines almost syrupy ripeness with a wonderfully tactile mouth feel and finishes very long, with dusty firming tannins.

17Jancis Robinson

Sweet and spicy but with a dry, fine texture. Lithe and scented on the palate. Persistent too.

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Nuits Villages, Gevrey-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin

Mazis-Chambertin is a 22.4 acre Grand Cru vineyard near the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. The name Mazis is sometimes spelled with a “y” or without the final “s.” The soil is shallow and somewhat rocky, and the wine made from this vineyard is considered excellent. The legendary Lalou Bize of Maison Leroy is one of the smaller landholders with about .6 of an acre. There are some 30 proprietors with parcels in Mazis-Chambertin. The largest are Hospices de Beaune, with 4.38 acres; Bernard Dugat-Py, with 3.05 acres; and Joseph Faiveley, with 3 acres.

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir, Grand Cru

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
