RATINGS

96The Wine Advocate

...aromas of red berries, cherries and plums mingled with exotic spices, peonies, blood orange and raw cocoa, it's full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a broad attack and a deep, multidimensional core. Long and perfumed...

94+ John Gilman

...excellent, offering up a nicely red fruity bouquet of red plums, cherries, raspberries, beautiful Vosne spice tones, a beautiful base of soil, rose petals and nutty new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and beautifully sappy at the core, with fine transparency and grip, suave, buried tannins, lovely focus and a long, complex and very classy finish. Fine, elegant juice.

93-95Vinous / IWC

...scents of truffle, damp autumnal leaves and dark berry fruit...palate is medium-bodied with more cohesion than the nose, modest weight, fresh and lightly peppered with a dab of white pepper and bay leaf towards the finish.

PRODUCER

Domaine Dujac

Domaine Dujac in Morey Saint Denis is relatively young by the standards of Burgundy estates. It was founded in 1967 when Louis Seysses, a food manufacturer who enjoyed good food and wine, bought an existing domaine so his son Jacques could try his hand at winemaking. Jacques had already apprenticed at other Burgundy estates, and Domaine Dujac’s first vintage was 1968. Dujac wines quickly earned acclaim and today they are, in the words of Burgundy expert Clive Coates, “intense, perfumed, silky-smooth and impeccably balanced.” The domaine remains a family operation which includes roles for Jacques’ wife, two sons and a daughter-in-law. The estate is comprised of 28 acres including prime parcels in the Grand Cru vineyards Clos de la Roche and Clos Saint-Denis. There are also parcels in Charmes-Chambertin, Bonnes-Mares, Echezeaux, Chambertin and Romanee-Saint-Vivant.

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Nuits-Villages, Flagey-Echezeaux, Echezeaux

Echezeaux is a 93-acre Grand Cru vineyard on the southern edge of the Cote de Nuits. It up the slope from Clos de Vougeot and Grands Echezeaux and is one of the largest grand crus in Burgundy. The vineyard varies in elevation from 250 to 300 meters, and the terroir includes significant clay as well as thin, rocky soil. The largest proprietors are Domaine de la Romanee Conti, with 11.68 acres; Mongeard-Mugneret with 6.25 acres, and Emmanuel-Rouget, with 3.58 acres. Echezeaux produces red wine.

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir, Grand Cru

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
