RATINGS

98James Suckling

Extremely complex, with grilled-meat, dried-strawberry, forest-floor and chanterelle-mushroom aromas, yet always subtle. Iron and white pepper, too. Medium to full body with fine, velvety tannins. Intense and flavorful.

96Vinous / IWC

...powerful, ample wine. Black cherry, plum, incense, new leather, tobacco and orange peel all fill out the layers in bold, sumptuous Pinot Noir that captures all this tricky year had to offer.

96+ Jeb Dunnuck

...beautiful bouquet of red and black fruits as well as scorched earth, graphite, and hints of violets. It's medium to full-bodied on the palate and has perfect balance as well as ample tannic structure, a great mid-palate, integrated acidity, and one heck of a finish.

95The Wine Advocate

...deep well of red fruit on the nose accented by nuances of peppercorn, prosciutto, burnt orange peel and aniseed...palate offers a stunning balance of delicate, perfumed fruit, abundant powdery tannins and bright bursts of acidity. It has a long, bitters-laced finish...

93Wine Spectator

Leads with light singed alder and mesquite hints, followed quickly by a juicy set of damson plum, cherry and raspberry fruit flavors. Shows a subtle sagebrush echo through the caressing finish...

REGION

United States, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County, Santa Rita Hills

Santa Rita Hills AVA in northern Santa Barbara County was granted appellation status in 2001. Located between the towns of Lompoc and Buellton, it has a total area of 30,720 acres with 2,700 vineyard acres. The area is considered a cool climate for vineyards, so vineyards are most often planted with the cool-weather grapes Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The hills in the western part of this appellation are directly exposed to the Pacific Ocean, meaning that maritime winds and fog make the western edge of the Santa Rita Hills AVA particularly cool. The Sanford & Benedict Vineyard planted in 1971 was the first vineyard in the district and is still considered one of the best.

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
