Avignonesi-Capannelle is a collaboration between Avignonesi in Montepulciano and Capannelle in Gaiole in Chianti. Avignonesi was started several centuries ago by the Avignonesi family, but in 2009 it was purchased by Virginie Saverys, a Belgian attorney with a life-long interest in wine. She turned the estate into an organic enterprise, and today the nearly 300 acres of vineyards are farmed biodynamically. Capannelle has 40 acres of vineyards and is owned by James B. Sherwood, founder of the Orient-Express Hotels Ltd. The wine called 50 & 50 is half Sangiovese from Capannelle and half Merlot from Avignonesi. About 15,000 bottles are produced annually.
